I have padauk dust staining the maple and mahogany neck laminations. How do you folks clean this, and with what? I'm pretty sure any solvent will make it worse, so maybe scrape with a razor blade? Thanks!Image

Compressed air didn't want to get all of the padauk out, so I did a light scrape with a razor blade on the entire neck, and with a card scraper to clean the maple end grain at the base of the backstrap. After the scraping, the compressed air did the trick for the remnants. Thanks!

 Now that we can see what it's supposed to look like, that first picture looks like it has a bad sunburn.

Nice work!

I was planning on putting a couple of coats of blonde shellac under the finish, but now I'm not sure. I like the "white" look of the maple, and the shellac will give it some colour. I think I'll see if there are any scraps in the bits & pieces box to try first.

Sometimes sanding to a finer grit and wiping as you do so can help eliminate sanding dust discoloration.

You might need to "dust" your first coats of finish to keep the padauk from bleeding onto the maple.

I sprayed a couple of coats of shellac, sanding sealer and finish, and there was no bleeding into the maple. I was careful not to sand through the shellac!
