Thanks, Anthony - I've been sort of drooling over your archtops in the past, including your current avatar. You are doing some beautiful work. Also enjoyed your pics from the visit with Dave Stewart. Dave and I have exchanged e-mails relative to the Ultima finish we're both using. Archtop guitars are the next project, and the one I've been dreaming about for nearly 30 years. I've got the woods just sitting here waiting for me, and I can't wait.

Got the Heel block and the End block glued in yesterday. When I got home from work today I just had to take it out of the mold and slide in the neck so it would look like a guitar. Gotta make my two sanding dishes next week, thats gonna be fun. Can't wait to start putting everything together. Seems like it takes forever and always another tool to buy or a jig to make.

Things are slowly happening in mine. Last weekend I was able to turn 3/16" fiberglass rods (from intothewind.com) into 48 go-bars and practiced jointing tops and backs with my #5 plane. This weekend I finally get to joint a non-practice top and back, inlay a rosette and get it to a working thickness. I may make some brace blanks and glue them in, too.

I had half a snow day as well, but I had to shovel 16 inches of snow. But did get a little shop time in. These are some tops I'm going to use to practice carving and tuning. They are $12-15 LMI sitka and cedar tops. 3 OMs and 3 Larry L's. The bracing is a combo of the OLF brace profile, X Brace angle from either John Mayes' OM layout or the Antes OM. The fingers and tones bars I just placed by what looked right. The OLF OM bracing seems heavy.

No snow days down here... the thermometer peaked at 37ºC (99F) today in the workshop.

Spent the past week or two cleaning and organising; invested in more shelving so that now every tool, jig etc. has a home. In theory things won't deteriorate into endless clutter like it always has in the past. It's amazing how far $100 worth of shelving goes in terms of keeping things neat.

Current guitars on the go. All hollowneck lap steels; the two middle ones are Weiss style, the leftmost is an original design based on a dreadnought lower body with a wide and deep hollow neck -- it's 5" wide at the start of the neck. It's Tasmanian myrtle with a WRC top, will be decked with rope binding and an EIRW fretboard. To the right is a blackwood body with maple trim. Right again is another blackwood model, this time with no trim at all. It's not my preferred style but I get quite a few customers who are interested in the very natural low-key sort of look... goes well with a satin finish. Without trim though they're a piece of cake to put together - little over a week to get to this stage from scratch if the weather and free time gods are kind.
