I don't know about the Clam, but I am taking the opposite approach. I am building a "takedown" guitar that will be carry on and fit in the overhead. I call it the "guitAR -7.

I just completed an 0-size with a removable neck, similar in concept to Clay's, but I had already started it before I saw Clay's great concept of having a removable panel and inserting the neck into the body for travel. That's a really nice idea . I'm thinking I'll do another one with the panelincluded. Clay, what combination of woods is that? Very nice color combination. And what finish did you use? I used french polish because it's easy to fix small nicks, etc. |

I didn't mean to side track David's topic. I too am interested in what the Airlines will and will not allow. One person told me they don't allow guitar strings to be "carried on". I have never heard this anywhere else. The guitar has BRW flitch matched laminated back and sides and an inexpensive Engalmann spruce top. Nitro lacquer finish. I am doing one with BRW/carbon fiber/BRW B&S and maybe I will post some pics when it is done. Does anyone know what the Airlines do or do not allow? I have heard 22 inches as the maximum length for carry on but don't know if this is true. The Clam cases look like an inexpensive alternative to the Calton case but not if they don't fly. |

Back to the main topic in this thread. I haven't traveled with a guitar recently, but looking at American Airlines as a test, the checked in baggage must be equal to or less than 62 inches combined dimensions (length + width + height). I believe many guitar cases are over that limit, and the clam clearly is over. The AA regulation the states there will be a $150 oversize charge. Up to now I've never had a fee charged when traveling with a large ski bag, but this year may well be different thanks to fuel costs, etc  . Maybe some of the guitar-toting travelers will chime in... |

In the last three months I have seen a full size guitar case and a full size b*njo carried on a SW Airlines plane. I'm sure that they all had their strings on. In the question as to the Clam case what does thier website say? |
