I have been so busy it has been a while since I have posted here. Here are a couple of photos of a 5 string violin I am making for a customer who asked specifically for Quilted Maple. Carving a violin scroll from quilted maple is not my favorite thing to do but I got it done. This is after one coat of varnish. |

Hmm... I dunno, looks like a fiddle to me. ![]() ![]() Is it just the quilting that makes the back look like it's wavy? or is it actually lumpy? How's it sound? |

It's not strung up yet...only the 1st coat of varnish. Yeah, it's real lumpy!!! |

I'll try to get some shots tomorrow of the scroll. Here is the front. There is a run in the varnish that I have to take care of before the 2nd coat. |

Very nice. I'd be curious to see what a fiddle would sound like with different sized holes or different shaped holes. |

Several makers use non traditional style holes and get good results. Violins have the same issues as guitars when you change body size, f-hole shape and size etc. |

Very nice! I'll be looking forward to anything that you can offer regarding the quilted maple. My wife has commissioned me to build her a quilted maple cello, so anything would help. |

Barry, that is a knockout! Douglas, you may want to research the tangential shrinkage rate of (flatsawn) quilted Maple before you build something as wide as a cello. It would be gorgeous, but might be very very finicky in response to changes in RH. Dennis |
