I've had my Perfomax 22-44 for about a year (have to look up the exact dates- 1 year warranty). I was making small passes on a rosewood back and felt the drive for the belt skip a beat. I knew exactly what that meant and took the drive motor and belt assembly apart. Sure enough, the main drive gear had lost a couple of teeth. I can't find any replacement parts lists for that area, just an entire new motor with drive (clutch) assembly. I would hate to have to buy a whole new motor but may end up having to do that. Anybody had any experience with these things? Have no idea why it let go, belt was tracking perfectly, no drift. I was taking very small passes to no load things up, frustrating! Ideas? If you are talking about the DC Gear Motor (or AC, not sure how the speed control is managed), you should be able to track down the gear box. I've seen them on various websites. But for that matter, surely Performax can answer this question, right? Mike |

I would imagine Perfomax (owned by a large group including JET) should be able to help but nowhere do they list a breakdown of the gear drive, I may have to buy the whole motor and drive. It's the motor that drives the belt, much smaller than the belt drive but still pretty necessary. I'll check with them on Monday, probably no other options. |

Well, I amnot familiar with your sander... sounds like you are saying that it has TWO gear motors. True? Anyways, a gear motor (normally DC for speed control) is two things, a motor and a gear box that mounts on the motor. If you check the model numbers on the motor and box, you should be able to cross reference and find the maker of the gear box. Not sure that will save money, but it is worth a try. Mike |

Thought I'd update the situation on my Performax 22-44. It indeed was the motor driving the belt that had the problem. There is a small pinion gear for drive then 2 gears, one plastic, one metal that act as reducing gears and provide drive for the belt. The last gear that drives the actual output to the belt lost 2 teeth. I called Performax this morning (owned by WMH tool group) and they said no replacement parts were available. Instead, they'd just send me a new motor. Works for me. I was out of warranty so they didn't have to honor it but they did. Made me feel like using their tools when possible when they offer service like that. I guess that company also owns Jet and a couple of other companies. Just thought I'd pass that along. Best Bruce |

That IS good news and good service. I cannot believe anybody uses plastic gears in such a device. Bet they have had a rash of problems with this. Mike |

In woodworking I find that the product leaders find it adventitious to treat their patrons with care. They seem to think it cost them less to aid a client in need than to fine new ones. Wow what a novel thought process |

I also suspect a gear problem, I don't think this was the first time someone had called in with this problem. Have to say,though, it does make me think about buying a product from them again after that kind of service. I will look at their lines of products first next time I'm ready for a power tool. Just curious, would you guys consider Jet to represent their upper end of the product line or just another maker they bought out..... just curious. The Jet larger band saws seem well built to me but I have no experience with them. When I'm ready to move up from my 14 inch I may look that way. Best Bruce |
