So a couple of days ago I started bending some Ash for my little SE117 guitars. Fox bender and heater blanket. Crack, crack, crack. I have lots of tricks to draw upon, so its not beginners failure. I've bent 1" X 2" Ash into some pretty tight bends, so 2mm should have been no problem. First piece, dry. Crack, crack, crack. Second piece, wet and wrapped in foil. Crack, crack, crack. Third piece was prepared like the second. After the second piece failed, I unwrapped it and just let it sit so that it wold dry out. I came back to it a little later to flip it so that it would dry evenly both sides, and noticed that it felt nice an pliable. I figured that I had nothing to lose in trying, so I put it into the side bender and tried bending it at room temp. Success! Tried it again, and it worked again, so no fluke. Go figure. |

I thought ash was extreemley flexible....Is this cross grain? |

Beautiful, clear, quartersawn Ash. Just a little off quarter to one side. I should add that this is air dried, cut and seasoned for several years. |
