I finally used my circle cutting jig to make my first rosette. Attachment: Guitar Rosette.jpg Nothing too crazy but a great feeling of accomplishment. |

Brad; What kind of circle cutting jig are you using? For a Dremal,router ?? I thought it was Walnut -looks great! Mike |

Looks like very precise work to me, and I would be extremely proud if I could accomplish such a thing. I love that narrow band of shell running through the wood. I think it's beautiful! Patrick |

He had something similar on a guitar he build and I asked him for a picture for inspiration. He was kind enough to send me several photos that helped me figure it out. |

You didnt say Brad .. but I figure you put the rosette in in stages .. ie, first, glue in the wood ring. then add the iner/outer rings, then the shell - this is how I teach my students to do it - its VERY tough to inlay something like this all in one go, without having a gap somewhere. One of my students who hangs here just put the outer rings in his last night, with the teflon spacer for the shell - we will get that in in his next session. Its all looking tight - hey Rick -maybe post a couple pix that you took last night of the process ??? |

Tony...Here is how I put it together. 1) I inlayed wood ring with the (2) outer and (2) inner perflings and glued together all in one stage. 2) Routed to shell slot and inlayed the shell and perflings next to the shell. Hard to say weather it was the easy or hard way. I just use a set of veneer calipers to make sure my sizes were good and everything fit together nicely. Part of the reason I did it this way is because I didn't have a down spiral router bit smaller than .125" in diameter.

Thanks Rick, everyone should note that we did a cheap and dirty LV bottled french polish wipe before the CA flood. We also brushed some into the channels before dry fitting the lines and teflon in there. next up we will run this thru the thickness sander and bring it down just to flush - wash it with FP again, then pull up the teflon and fit the shell, flood with CA. |
