Hey all
I sure have missed everyone here at the OLF.... but massive comp failure has left me out of the loop - I finally got time to scavenge a PIII together with a crappy "old" 10G HD so Im back around til I blow this one up -
Anyhow humidity which wasnt an issue at all at my previous place is a wild ride in my new shop! I got a Danby dehumid and that keeps the highs in check but now the lows have arrived with the cold snap.... anyhow I was working on bracing last I posted but held off with all pieces ready to go until I had the shop more humidity and (now) temp controlled....
It has given me a chance to work on binding and rosette - and jig building/perfecting,,,
My homemade drum sander was pretty good but dipped .010 on the very ends,,, so I needed to true up the wheel ever so slightly.... All I can say after manually pushing through a top back and sides... is
anyone know where I can get a good deal on a performax?
Actually its just a matter of building an automated conveyor as everything else works perfectly... I might as well go the distance now....
The neck blank is ready for wwork - blah blah blah - been busy...
The Woolson neck jig is complete - the body and bending mold also, I got a Delta 6" jointer Ridgid OSS, and Im building a few more handplanes a couple for myself and a model for a friend,,,, someone frolm the OLF gave me a beauty of a kit... Norris #51 pattern smoother, from St James Bay... which after careful consideration Ive decided to have proffessionally machined,,, its a little too nice to mess up and all the planes Ive done to date are straight sided which makes me a little nervous....
I have missed all the posts here however and could have used this resource numerous times throughout my absence.... Anyway wantd to say hey to the folks I know here, and say Im glad to be back!!!!
Cheers
and Happy Holidays!!
Charlie

Great to be back guys really - yes Rod I did get your message and Im planning on ringing you soon, spoke to Stn myself about that - but thanks for relaying the message..
Im glad you asked about the place Danny,
Erin and I are in heaven!!!! Truly!!!
Its nice to be here and finally be starting work on different plans we have had for over a decade, and some - God I sound old~!
My shop is infinitely better than my previous setup... and Erins garden astounded literally everyone who saw it this year, even though we couldnt begin working on it until May 1st and didnt get some things planted until end of June... Things just went beserk!!!
We were eating out of our garden daily (fresh and organic) and even now we are enjoying the fruits of (mostly Erins) labor... and we were able to share with many people too.
People (locals and neighbours) are encouraging Erin to grow a market garden, so they can buy produce for sale from her garden, so that may open an avenue for her.. as she has always wanted to work from home and has comtemplated building a greenhouse/cut flower operation
for this purpose...
My shop is great as mentioned - having space to work is fabulous - having a dust collector to catch dust is even better, and Ive been accumulating odds and ends like a fret press, fretscale and nut spacing templates, and neck routing templates, nut and fretting tools, binding cutter and bearing sets etc etc etc from StewMac and LMI to round out my luthier arsenal!!!!
Man what a trade luthierie is - there are so many trade specific tools and jigs for this gig its unbelievable....
Im getting there however - and rounding it out with what I can make.
As far as whining about my thickness sander, I complain but its working really well and Id advise anyone thinking of building thier own to go ahead - its really scarier to contemplate than to actually complete...
Glad to see you all my friends - I could have been done my acoustic a couple times over mabye by now mabye,,,, but Im really trying to get #1 right,,, also I have a semi hollowbody LP style electric to work on as well now, thanks to the luthier swap meet,,,
Hey I didnt miss any of those did I?
LOL
Cheers
Charlie

Hey Lillian
Good to see you again too! I still have a parcel of DVDs to send to you I havent forgotten,,,, its getting larger all the time though,,,, lol

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous posts was that someone I met over the summer has given me a power wheelchair - which is really handy for bombing around the house in... its amazingly new too - I couldnt believe it when the guy said no charge - these things arent cheap!!!!
I begged him to take something for it, but he wouldnt

Another fine individual, Pat whom I know from my area - phoned me one day and asked me if Ive ever done any rock work... polishing lapping etc... I told him I did... but that I really didnt want to do that anymore - but that I could really use any such equipment for cutting and polishing stone for stone mosaic work, and potentially processing paua shell for inlay work... he said hed bring some stuff by for me to look at -
Now Im expecting this guy to show up with like a a rock tumbler and a flat lap at most...
His truck was PACKED full of gear - there was a a 12" Lortone oil cooled auto feed diamond saw... a 10" water cooled diamond rock saw.... a flat lap, a vibrating lap, an oscillating drill press, a dual arbor polishing setup.... a dual arbor grinding setup, tons of grit powders, drip towers and collection trays, spare motors, belts, and pulleys as well as bearings, extra buffing wheels and grinding wheels....there were instructional videos, books and magazines... etc etc etc etc
Just amazing!!! I said sure I was interested but what did he want for it..
Again nothing!!!! and I couldnt convince him to take any money....
he said shoot him something good if it came up... Im working on getting him and his family some nice meat that I have access to... but wow what a super nice guy huh?
Just great luck (except comps) the last while...... and the gear is definitely going to make my life easier thats for sure... Ill tell you my plans for some of that rock equipment in another post.. I would like some advice on some of my plans also..
Cheers
Charlie

Hey Charlie, that's all good news. But I'm curious. Did your new wheels come with studs or chains? If its dumping down here you guys must be getting more.
