A new post to speak about a strange but interesting idea :
The french luthier Philippe Agator made some strange electric guitars using slate to build the top plate.

It's in french, but he plays the guitar at the end of the video.

The top plate looks quite thin, and it looks to be on a light weight body, some even chambered, so the weight is probably not too bad. Looks like nice work.

His accent is thick! Not at all the French that I can follow easily.

I hope his departure from traditional building techniques doesnt get him "stonewalled" from the rest of the luthier community.

Apart from a possible weight issue, the only down side that I can see is difficulty in repairing the top if it gets chipped. I'm assuming he has found a way to deal with joining it to wood that moves. I like the sound of it. It looks cool. So, why not.
