Two babies are on their way back. I'm so excited!
I love the finish he does. Nice guy too!

I have not seen a sunburst like that before where the sides are bursted along the length. Usually the sides are bursted across the width at the waist, head and tailblock areas. I am not sure that I like that one, Steve. Sorry to be blunt.

I am sure lots of other folks will post that I am wrong and they love the sunburst. No problem. Everyone is entitled to thier opinion. I just commented because I think there is a more attractive way to sunburst sides. Doing it this way makes it a little too "stripey" to my eye.

Don't think you're wrong. There is no wrong or right, apparently, in guitar building, just different tastes. Thousands of ways to do everything. I built my first out of Zebrawood, so stripey doesn't seem so strange to me.

I have the same reaction as Barry, and mostly because I am an admitted traditionalist. I would have preferred no edge shading at all. As always, these aesthetic judgments are so personal and in the end, it only matters to the customer. The execution is superb as we have all come to expect from Joe.

This guitar is no exception to the rule - they look better in person than in photos.
I really like what Joe did for this one. It is really growing on me. My family likes it. None of them are knowledgeable about bursts or shading. They just know what they like and don't like. They would have told me if they didn't like it.

This guitar was built as a prototype of a rounded Laskin style armrest. Most armrests are beveled. I wanted to try a different approach. As you all know, armrests are difficult to build. No one else that I know builds a rounded armrest, so I was on my own developing the process. The process that I thought I had worked out did not turn out so well, so the edge shading is an attempt to show as much wood as possible, while covering a flaw in the execution of the armrest. The flaw is only near the armrest.
I learned a lot on this one. No covering will ever be needed again thanks to this prototype.
I'm a wood guy and would not cover wood unless I had to.
For those that don't know - those new to building, coloring and bursts are often used to cover flaws in wood and/or construction. I seriously considered destroying this instrument because of the flaw. Before I did, I contacted Joe to inquire about any way to deal with the flaw. This was our collaborative effort at this. If you like it, give Joe the credit. If you don't like it, blame me.
I'm just glad the guitar was able to be saved. I used my last long pieces of manzanita on it.
This guitar was not a commission build, it was intended for me.
No one seems to know what the wood is on it.
The top is Lutz - my first lutz guitar. I can't wait to put strings on it!

Steve...good for you on the prototype...this is the kind of stuff that helps to become a better builder. And thanks for sharing.

The pics coming out of the White room are sometimes off IMO. I hate fluorescent lighting for photos, even when they are supposedly white-balanced. Natural lighting or even flash always seems to be more realistic.
