I'm looking for some ideas for different thicknesses to try on a 5- or 7-piece neck.

Would LOVE to see your multi-piece necks.

Paul, that neck: 5 ply Curly Maple Neck; with 1/8" IRW - 1/4" Curly Maple - 1/8" IRW center stripe

5-string neck-thru bass - maple, walnut, ebony and padauk. Back in the day when it was easy to source 4' long 4/4 ebony. [:Y:]

I didn't say I made it, just that I had one. That's a neck on a Little Blue Martin that I have. But it looks like maple, maybe birch?
