Ribbon stripe sapele from Uncle Bob for the back and sides
Black and white fiber sheets from Uncle Bob for the purfs

Engleman top from Allied
Cedar neck material from Allied
Ebony finger board blank from Allied

I cut the bindings and trim from a block of curly maple that I friend in town gave me.

Brazilian bridge blank from my friend Mike Collins

Head stock lamination made from left over pieces from the back along with my binding scheme

Tru-oil on back and sides

French Polish on the top

Solid linings for sides to back and kerfed linings for sides to top.

Stephen, that's some fine work there. Good, tight joints, nice miters, and-- don't laugh-- but I think the ends of your frets look great. That's the sort of thing that a player will stare at and eventually think: "hey that's nice...why don't other guitars look this well-executed?"

Another fine guitar Stephen, congrats and nice work. I'm glad to see Sapele for back and sides, I think it has a lot of fine attributes for instrument building and would like to see more of it used for classical guitars.

Congratulations Stephen... a beautiful instrument and definitely one to be proud of. [:Y:] [:Y:] [:Y:]

If you'd like to clean up the look of your fret ends at the 19th fret where they intersect the arc of the sound hole, trim the tangs back with a fret nipper on the inboard side then you'll find that they are much easier to file to your line and you can fill the fret slot with some black shellac stick. That way the tangs will never show and it will give a nice, clean look. I'm at the fretting stage on two now and I'll take a picture or two if I can remember to do so.

Beautiful work! I've got one curing now from Sapele, and I love the look of that wood. So much better than plain old 'hog. Oh, and it was a piece of cake to bend.

Stephen, that's a mighty fine looking instrument you've got there, the detail of the workmanship is excellent. I'd love to hear a sound clip if that's at all possible?

Thank you everyone for your kind words.

I was able to take a fretting class from a luthier here in town and it helped a lot. I did actually trim the tangs at the 19 frets but not enough. It does stick out. The sapele was a breeze to work with and RC Tonewoods has it at a reasonable cost. I like this rosette design of mine and intend to use it on most if not all of my guitars in the future. I am indeed working on a maple build with a lutz top, but it will take a bit longer as the kids are out of school for the summer.(More fishing and kite making, less building.)

Stephan, the sound clip works great and the guitar sounds great too! Great trebles. I will listen on my other computer that has better speakers to see how teh bass sounds.......these cheap speakers don't carry the bass well.

I am also intrigued with your finish of the fret tangs..hmmmm.....
The bass has a very nice clear ring to it - my first build is a bit muddy...looking for options for my current (2nd) build.
What fan pattern did you use? Standard 7-fan Torres or....?

This is a Torres pattern. I have the Romanillos book about Torres and studied his basic bracing pattern. I took that idea and laid out the bracing using measurements from the top I had in hand instead of transferring measurements from a plan. The point of origin for all of the fan braces is at the 12th fret and I arched the lower tone bar. I spaced the braces to make everything even. I was very surprised to hear a change in tap tone after I added the closing bars. It rang a bit more and I feel that this guitar "rings" as it is played. If I had one word to describe the sound of this guitar it would be "ringing". I also followed the basic ideas of the recently published Kent Everett voicing dvd in how I thicknessed the top to begin with.

Wow, very nice instrument!

Coincedentally, my last build was a engelman/sapele OM (steel string). I love the combo and will be using it again in the future.

Killer rosette too, by the way!
