OK, one of the early guitars I made several years ago now needs a neck reset. The fingerboard inlays were poorly done by me back then so I decided to replace the fingerboard during the process. I removed enough of the fingerboard (uo to around the 10th fret) so now the neck joint is full exposed. I must have glued this sucker in good back then because it is tight.

Wondering how I should proceed? I know I have seen the articples on making a steam contraption but wonder if being I have the gfingerboard off if I can simply pour some boiling water into the joint to loosen the neck ?

IMHO pouring boiling water is too much water. I use a pressure cooker, with a hose hooked to it and one of the needles you inflate a basketball with.

Cappuccino makers from the salvation army work pretty well also. You really do need to steam the sucker if you want to avoid catastrophic neck block/dovetail damage.

I think i remember Don Teeter recommending a method where he removed the entire fingerboard, poured water into the gap between the dovetail and block, stuck a butterknife business end first into the gap and then blasted the protruding part of the knife with a propane torch untill the water boiled, somehow that method never really caught on...

John, I will call you either late this week or next week. Traveling for business all week. Hope you had a good show at ASIA, wish I could have been there.
