Hello everyone. Mike Heidrick.

I am a hobbiest woodworker and part time cabinet and furniture maker mentoring under a local cabinet maker. I am also the president of a woodworking club at work.

I am joing this forum to learn the secrets to a few traits I love about Luthiers:

1. Learn to be better at finishing/spraying
2. Learn to use my bandsaw better for resawing
3. Learn to spot amazing wood in the rough

I have a guitar building friend who is the best finisher I know. I figure he had to have learned it from somewhere. Also he comes up with some of the best looking wood in his instruments I have ever seen and I want to learn to do that to and apply it to my woodworking.

I am a tool junkie and have some amazing tools to resaw, shape, cut etc. I just want to learn to use them at the next level. I believe luthiers, because of their high standards and their customers high standards, are some of the best woodworkers in the world.

Please do not mind me reading and learning from you guys. I may ask some questions as well.

Thanks for making this site!!

Welcome to OLF Mike! :) What was said above covers pretty much what I'd have said so I'll not bother to repeat it. As a professional furniture and cabinet maker with 30+ years experience, I too believe that lutherie is the finest of all woodworking. Being a superb woodworker will not necessarily make one a superb luthier. However, being a superb luthier will place one among the finest of all woodworkers. Especially if you take advantage of the learning of inlay, carving, structural integrity, and finishing skills and techniques. Enjoy your learning experience here. Even with over 3 decades of experience as a woodworker (and now a luthier), I continue to learn more and more every day. The vast amount of knowledge, skills, and techniques available are more than can be achieved in a single lifetime (though with determination, you can get close :D) There's a compilation of brilliance in skills and knowledge here and if you apply the ones that click with you, it can only serve to make you better.
