I've heard that nitrocellulose-type finishes have the advantage of retouching easier than some other types. Does that include the option of shooting new Nitro on top of existing coats without stripping off the old Nitro? Let's say you have Nitro-finished acoustic guitar that is damaged and the repair damages/removes/discolors the finish at that spot. Is it practical to just put a few more coats on the entire top (or back or side, whatever) and make the repair less obvious? Or would that require a complete "refinish" with the stripping and sanding and so forth? |

Spraying a new coat of nitro onto an old nitro finish is called overspraying and it use to be done quite a bit. The new coat will burn into the old coat but be sure that it has been well cleaned of dirt, wax and any other contaminates. Also, be aware that overspraying may devalue a vintage guitar. |
