Hello everyone,

I just wanted to send out a word that our monthly New England meeting is happening this Sunday, November 22nd at noon at my shop just outside of Boston in Brookline, MA. I know there are many of you here who live somewhat close and I wanted to get the word out to you that I think we are going to have a really good meeting.

Some members are going to bring their vacuum systems for us all to see and hopefully we will be able to brainstorm some new jigs and fixtures for us all to work on.

We are also going to do a test run of a blind listening session. We have been discussing the difficulty in describing guitars when so many of the words seem to blur along their definitions. In this case, we all want to hear the same instrument at the same time and discuss what we are all hearing. I am very excited for this.

On top of these things, it is always enjoyable to meet other builders and see and handle the excellent work they have been doing. My shop will be open for anyone to poke around also.

If you are interested, directions are on the main page of newenglandluthiers.org or you can feel free to pm me. For those of you who might want to make a day trip out of it there is free parking on my street and the T is a 3 minute walk with a 15 minute ride into downtown Boston.

If any of you can make it it will be great to see/meet you!

I'm deep in the negotiation process with my wife, feeling pretty optimistic that these negotiations will yield the desired result of me being able to take off for a couple days to do this. It's about 6 hours drive for me, so I'd be leaving here before sunrise, tired and hungry by the time I got there. Is there going to be any food? If not, I can pack a lunch and eat it in the car before I arrive.

My mom lives in Manchester, CT, so this would be an excuse for me to visit her Sunday night as well, and crash at her place.

I had the pleasure of meeting Burton at the ASIA Symposium earlier this year, and I found him to be an exceptionally pleasant chap - much nicer than he looks ;) - not to mention very talented.

I really hope I can make this work out, Burton. It would be great to see you again and a treat to see your shop, and I'm sure it'll be a most fruitful meeting.

I'll see you Sunday!

Wish I had something new to bring... two are getting finishes put on, three are under construction... I'll bring my ash zoukulele (the new name I thought of for the instrument I'd been calling a mando-uke or an alto guitar), and I might bring my first guitar as well, it being the only 6-stringer I have in my possession that's strung up and ready to play - maybe it will come in handy for the listening session.

Looking forward to it!

I would like to go, two considerations I have now, I am going on a fishing trip, may or may not be back saturday night, and the second is my truck, the last two long trips I took with it resulted in breakdowns , i bought it new in 2000 now it has 165,ooo miles on it, she's showing her age ! LOL with this economy I am not sure when I will be able to replace it ! never know with me though , I may get a wild hair going and "go fer it " anyways ! if not maybe next time . how often do you fellas meet there ? NEL meetings are usually once a month, on the second Sunday in general, iirc. We don't generally meet in the summer, unless somebody on the Cape wants to get up a cookout... :D

Burton has probably the smallest shop you've ever seen: it's wonderful the way he's fit in everything. I've been trying to remember my 'alternate breathing' techniques; if everyone inhales at the same time it can be a problem.

How'd it go? Wish I'd been there - weekend was filled with Hockey and Football for my 9 year old.

It was a fun meeting, as usual.

There was a nice demo of some of the latest vacuum stuff: it's come a ways since I fooled with it ten or twelve years ago. Then we adjourned upstairs for the real work: a listening test. We've been talking about guitar sound, and how to judge it, on the NEL mailng list of late, and felt that this might be a good time to have our own 'shootout', like they do at the GAL meetings.

There were eight guitars present for the test: two commercial Dreads (an older Martin in BRW, and a Collings), with six steel strings and two classicals, all by members of the group. We had a nice discussion about what we were listening for, and how to rate things, and then got down to business. Burton first played all the steel strings, to give us a range, and then he played several selections on each of them so we could try to figure out how to rate them. The two classicals followed, played by a different person (who's name, alas, escapes me!). Then we discussed the instruments, and listened again to the two Dreads.

It's really hard to say which instrument was 'better' overall. Each of them had strengths and weaknesses, and would be somebody's 'Holy Grail'. I'm not as much of a fan of the Martin Dread sound, and rated that guitar a bit lower than some folks did, I'm sure. I can see the utility of it, though, and it's just the thing for some settings. One of the classicals was mine, and I'm pretty pleased with it overall. However, while the two classicals were very much different, each of us found a lot to like in the other guy's guitar, and the group seemed to feel, as I did, that they were pretty much equal in terms of musical utility.

Some of the discussion we've been having has broached the prospect that we could do this at every meeting (with, perhaps, fewer guitars!), to try to come to some concensus about what 'good' sound is, and what we mean in using various terms to describe it.

A kudo has to go to Todd Stock, who got up at five in the morning to drive to this meeting from Ithaca NY. Not only was his presence appreciated, but he brought along a very nice, and 'different', guitar that added it's own dimension to the test.

And, while I'm at it, another thank you has to go to Burton, for hosting, playing, and providing one of the best balanced instruments (in all respects) I've heard in some time. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to Steve Spodaryk, who's been organizing this thing (and keeps showing up with those superb parlors!). It's easy to forget that good stuff like this doesn't just happen; somebody has to _do_ it.

Very nice report, thanks for that. Wish I could attend (and try one of your classicals, Alan) but alas, I'm a left-handed
lefty on the left coast!

I'm always in favor of kudos to Todd Stock, but it just so happens that it was this particular Todd who was crazy enough to drive so far for this meeting (no offense taken, Al). It was well worth it, and it didn't hurt that I got to include a visit with my mom in the trip.

My thanks as well to Burton for hosting, and to everyone who came. It was great to meet those I hadn't met before and see those I've gotten to know at past gatherings. I enjoyed playing and hearing all the wonderful guitars, and got some great tips and ideas.

If I found myself stranded on an island with nothing but Burton's guitar, well, I'd miss my wife and kids... but not too much...

Dam!!! I’m sorry I missed this one and I’ll be in Quincy just 10 miles south from Wednesday night through Friday night.
Sometimes timing is everything.

I couldn't make this one, but look forward to meeting you guys in the future.

Rich, I'm in Naugatuck, maybe we could carpool to the next one if schedule allows?

It was a great meeting! It was great to be able to play and hear a bunch of different guitars all in the same room at roughly the same time. It made me realize how rare it is to be able to do that. Even rarer is for there to be a bunch of great guitar makers also there and also listening and then discussing it as a group. I have been thinking about what we heard for the last couple days. I am very excited about us keeping it up.

It is always fun to see everyone and especially nice to have Todd come all the way to the coast (and bring a sweet guitar!). Rich and Rob, you guys are welcome any time. I hope you can make it to a meeting sometime soon.

Seeing the vacuum jigs was great too. Watching Steve Spodaryk's frame suck down over a 1/8 x 3/8 brace placed on its side without knocking it over was pretty eye opening about what that thing can do. I am sold on making one. Bob Pittman also came up with a great vacuum tube to force color into veneer and fiber. Hopefully we will be able to work out a color schedule and then be able to dye the .01 white fiber any color we want for purflings. That would open up some great options.
