Does anyone have any pics of maple purfs on a soundboard or around a shell rosette? I am wondering what it looks like compared to regular bwb/bw purflings. My first build is going to be EIR/Cedar and I want to bind with EIR with a maple purfling strip on the side, but then I think it would look weird to have white on the top with the maple on the sides. Does anyone sell premade black/maple purfs or is it not too hard to just buy the individual strips from LMI and laminate? Thanks a bunch |

Ed, Allied Lutherie sells Black-Maple-Black in two different heights. Search the archives and you'll find plenty of pictures of rosettes. Best, Flori |

Are you ever up Mississauga way Ed ???? I have lots of purfs ... no white as I dont use the stuff (looks too factory to me) ... its all maple, b/mpl/b, and other lams with maple, plus single lines too .... |

I'd suggest using all maple. Ive seen a few that are mix and match and thought it looked odd. I think one was printed on a prominent guitar building DVD. I dont like the look of white perf, maple looks much more natural and less harsh. |

Depending on the maple used at .004 to .002 maple appears a an ever so slightly off white line. get 1/16 or wider it appears to have a be more light tan hue. look almost amy BWB purfling other than the plastic stuf and maple is the white line. Attachment: f1.JPG This photo from an other post today is .002 Black/.002 Wwhite/.002 Black purfling just in side the bindigstock using Maple as the white. probably fish paper as the black. |

OOPS I miss read the first time through you are talking only maple as the purfling. I don't have any photos but I have don it twice. Once on a Koa top and once on a natural color Sitka top. the Koa top looked just fine but the natural spruce looked as if I was trying to hide problems of an over sized channel. Just to close in color to spruce. personal opinion is you need a contrast color betwen the maple and spruce |

Thanks for the replies. Tony, I am sometimes down in the city, do you have enough to spare to sell me some? Tim, I am talking about smaller black/maple/black purflings, although that large curly maple purf is exquisite, are the smaller lines maple as well? |

Here's some maple lines in both top and side purfling: Attachment: ENDTOPPURFLINGmed.JPG This is a Walnut/Engelmann guitar with curly Koa binding; on the top you see EI Rosewood, Maple, and Mahogany lines, and on the side maroon dyed Maple, EI Rosewood, and Maple lines. |

Ed, Glenn The bwb purfling I believe I bought from Stew Mac. Like Todd said the maple veneer in the center is not as bright as fiber, holly, or even the maple veneer from LMI would be but I thought the color went well with the maple strip, which I made. I'll see if I can get a half way decent photo of that purfling and include the rosette which is bwb that I made from veneers from LMI and Allied. Tim |

I am going to recant on my statement that the LMI maple veneer is brighter. I think it looks brighter around the rosette but believe that it is an optical illusion because the black veneer,(from Allied a couple of years ago) is not only very black but it is also wider. The actual maple strips appear to be about the same shade in the real world. Thanks for the compliments guys Attachment: purf3.jpg

Ed, I bought that shell from Andy De Paule at www.luthiersupply.com That particular shell was on a special sale a while back, and I'm always looking for a sale. It came in random lengths that were 2" +/- and I made up a couple of rings to sand them to the size I wanted and to trim the ends to fit flush. I would feel bad if I didn't say that one of my favorite people to deal with is JoAnn at Resuce pearl, www.rescuepearl.com I buy more from her and over a longer period of time. She also has great sale items and real nice specials. Hope that helps Tim |

Boxwood would also be another choice for purf lines you might like. |
