This is what I know in terms of the internet video feed so far. The feed will be live during each class session. Those choosing to attend via the feed will be able to type in questions. Right now I think we will limit the time frame towards the end of each class session for internet question so that we don’t end up covering questions that in person attendees may bring up. There be 4 sessions of 4 hours each starting May13th and running thru the 16th. There will be a fee to get a password to attend the class via internet feed. It will be a reduced rate form the live attendance fee since I will not be able to be hands on with those viewing the feed. The 16th will be mostly a review class so the questioning time frame may be more liberal on the 16th. Robbie is out of town till Tuesday so I will know more then. I think the video feed is a great Idea and hope to make this pretty much an annual event as long as interest stays high enough. Robbie is a great host and good friend. I thoroughly enjoy presenting these classes at RRCC.

I guess I should add that the class will be evening classes the 13th -15th to allow in-person attendees to see Dever's sites during the week days and a morning class the 16th to allow them to get on the road home early. This will also work well for the allowing more to be able to attend via the video feed as well.

Like I said Fred, I don't know yet. Robbie will set the fee. I am paid a set fee regardless of attendance to give the class. All income outside of that goes to RRCC to supporrt Robbie's department I assume. Robbie is out of town till Tuesday but will work out the live feed details when he gets back and either Robbie or myself will post the info promtly. I can say it will be less than the fee to attend in person but i don't know how much less yet.

Michael-
When you/Robbie post more info, please include details of who will be handling the video camera (a pro from the college, or one of the participants, etc..), whether you will be mic'd, etc.
It makes a difference!

Thanks
John

This sounds very interesting. I would hope it would be a pro wielding the camera on a tripod becasue shakey cmaeras give me a headache & depending on the fee I would not want to pay a much money unless it was HD & could get really good closeups which all means good lighting too.

I also would be interested in a download or DVD that comes out of this.

This may or may not show up as one of Robbie’s Tips Dejour. As you that have viewed any of Robbie’s Tips Dejour know he is proficient enough with a video camera not to provide a shaky feed. As far as this coming out on DVD or CD Well that is a whole other mater that Robbie and I have not even discussed.

For those that will not be able to attend this year in person or by the live feed. I intend annually teach this class as long as there is interest enough to do so. There will be next year, interest permitting.

For any that may plan to attend live or by the feed here is a list of materials needed for the class.

There are many acceptable substitutes for some of the supplies. However I will only mention the ones I personally would use.

100% dewaxed shellac flakes or a pre mixed shellac such as Zinsser’s Bulls Eye Seal Coat 100% dewaxed shellac or Liberons Pale premixed French polish. (the only two premixed I recommend)

Denatured Alcohol or 180 proof Pure Grain alcohol from a liquor store.

4 or 6 oz of "100% pure" Walnut oil or "Extra Virgin" Olive oil

Eight to ten 4” x 4” well worn non-dyed Muslin or linen squares (Outer muneca or outer pad)

A couple feet of non-dyed 100% wool roving. (Inner muneca or pad)

Three 2 or 4 oz plastic bottles with caps (bulk shellac and oil storage)

Four eye dropper bottles with eye droppers (one for 2# shellac, one for 1# shellac, one for alcohol and one for the lube oil.)

Small natural bristle artist brush (for sealing purflings prior to spit coat and bodying)

Available supply of 8.5 x 11 printer paper

A good med high intensity work lamp

A lint free work pad like a well worn folded linen sheet

Several pair of nitril gloves

Last but not least; A good bit of patients and determination.

Notice that no sand paper is mentioned. This is for a direct reason. I teach to build your film level as you go by spiriting off after every session. If this principle is followed then the is no need to ever have to sand the film level.

I hope to see you all next year - I could use some Colorado time. I'm picking up pointers here in Granada from one builder I've gotten in touch with, but tips on FP are not among them - he farms all his out.

Hi guys .... sorry if I missed it, but is there any specific information on this class - in person or via video feed? I can't find anything.

Filippo and others,

Here is Michael's original post about the class.

Here is another one with some info as well

The French polish class is being offered by Michael Payne at Red Rocks community College in Lakewood, Colorado May 13th-16th. This same class was offered last year by Michael and was a huge success. Michael has offered to do it again for the price of 300 bucks. It is a complete hands on course that will allow students to learn the technique from begining to end under Michael's instruction.
I mentioned to Michael the possibility of doing a live internet feed of the class to benefit those that can't make it to the class in person.
Disclaimer: The technology currently available does not allow for the same level of detail and perspective that being there live and in-person does and that this is NOT a substitute for experiencing this workshop in person. However, if you want to get an idea of the process and be able to be a fly-on-the-wall while saving hundreds of dollars in airfare and tuition, this is one way to do that.
With that said there will be a charge for the live internet option. This price will be between 100 bucks and 200 bucks depending on whether or not the offsite participants are able to participate with questions or just allowed to watch the live audio/video feed and follow along at home. I will still make a judgement call about this.
Anyway, the educational opportunity is available for those that want it. Contact me for more info if interested.

I took Robbie's FP class with probably the same meeting technology (Robbie it was Adobe correct?) and with a crappy DSL connection (what I had at the time) the connection was fine. I could hear and see well enough to participate and send occasional spurious noises back to the group and blame Robbie for it... :D

I will be doing the live feed at Michael Payne's upcoming french polish masterclass at RRCC.

The price for the online feed is $150.
The class is scheduled for May13-May 16th. The 13th and 14th the class will be from 5-9PM Colorado time. The 15th the class will need to be from around 4-8 PM and the 16th the class will probably be from 9-1. Participants will be able to ask questions so they can follow along at home.
I will not be providing a link for future viewing. Once the class is over it is over. Perhaps I will be filming the class and Michael and I may be working to make a DVD of this class and his french polish method. However, the last one I did with Kent Everett took over a year to complete so don't be expecting it anytime soon if at all. A lot of things need to go right to be able to make the DVD.

Let me know if you are interested or have any questions.
Thanks,

Robbie
