Need "Wood ID" bought at estate sale

Post subject:  Need "Wood ID" bought at estate sale
I bought about 25 b/ft of 5/4 wood at an estate sale that the owner said was Cherry Wood that his uncle brought from Indiana to California.

[uncle] I'm pretty new to working with any wood that isn't plywood or 2x4's
Ran some thru my drum sander today and this is what it looks like.
Color in photo is pretty accurate.
Does this wood look like Cherry to you?
If not what is your guess?

I've got some good pieces that are flatsawn that is pretty straight grained that I assume would be good for necks. There is even a piece that is fairly quartered thru the first 6 inches of a 9 inch board.

I keep getting closer to actually starting #1.
Adjusted my drum sander today so it sands flat and just had to start looking at some of the wood I've collected and had put away in the garage.

You guys have been a great resource of info that I keep putting in my head. Someday I might even know something Eat Drink

There is some quilt but I haven't wet it to see how it really looks :D

Cherry is lovely stuff -great for necks (and probably for b+s as well) and I like the way it darkens with age.

There are some voids/split that I've got to avoid mostly towards the outside edges but I think there is plenty of usable wood... If not it will make some nice cherrywood bindings :D

Not bad for $25 for it all bliss

John does it get real dark as it ages? Know of any comparison pictures?

It can darken quite a bit. Not sure how to quantify it though. The crazy thing is how fast it darkens with exposure to sunlight. When I used to build furniture, I'd tell people not to leave coffee table books on their new coffee tables because it will leave a light shadow in a couple of days.

That's nice wood, by the way.

Dennis-
No comparison pics for you, but it does darken quite a lot with time. It does keep the nice rich cherry look, though-
Some woods just turn grey/dark/uninteresting with UV exposure - not cherry.

Looks like some nice ribbon figured cherry you have there.Nice find! [:Y:] When freshly cut it should smell like sweet cherries. Very nice.

Has anyone built a steel string with Cherry back and sides? I remember reading that Wayne Henderson did, and liked it. What might you expect in terms of tone?

Not yet but I have a set of curly cherry I'll be using sometime in the near future. I expect it might be similar to walnut but really don't know.
