How much of the fret board should be masked before spraying? I've masked the top and sides, but get a ridge of varnish when I remove the masking. I'm concerned about sanding it down too far.

I only mask the top of the fingerboard, finish on the sides of it is normal and the masking line is on the edge and sands of easily.

Pretty much as noted by Fred. I mask the top of the f/b, exposing just a hairline of the top edge. After spraying and removing the mask, I run a small sanding block along the top edge to break the finish then clean up the top of the f/b with a razor blade. Makes for a very clean transition.

So do you fret before or after spraying?

I fret before. Some fret after.

I fret the board before I put it on the neck , Like Fred I mask off the top and clean up after. I don't like masking the sides , I want finish there and use the edge of the fretboard to be the separator.
