Post subject:  Anyone willing to talk to a beginner?
Hello, I have talked and heard a lot from you guys in just one week!! I am so thankful and grateful for your guyses help and insite. Thank you all so much for the sharing of knowledge and experiance with newcomers. I was wondering if anyone on here would be willing to discuss one on one with me, questions I had your experiances, tricks of the trade, just talk about the hobby. I feel like I would greatly benefit from this...We can talk anyway available to you. IE email, PM, phone, w/e...Just would like to have somes personal experiances shared, and questions directly asked

Where do you live? Perhaps you would benefit most if you find someone in your area that you can visit. There are often OLF get togethers in various geographical locations as well. You can learn a lot from those events.

Joey,

What Filippo is saying is that there are many different ways to make a guitar, all hand tools, all power tools and cnc, a combo of both. Some people like to use science, spreadsheets, signal generators and tuners to adjust the braced plates, others like to develop intuition from experience and just tap, others still just shoot for finite dimensions. There are these types of differences in technique in each part of making a guitar. So read through the posts, as Filippo says, you will come to understand the different methods and which members gravitate to which method and soon you will start to see a process that sits well intuitively with your thoughts on the guitar. Then single out those members or post specific questions in a new thread and they will be right along to offer you insight!

What a great idea. Since I am just beginning the journey by making the bender, etc. when I get to actually building the guitar I am in the Seattle area and I am wondering if there are some folks that I could visit or groups that meet where I could attend. I think there is a Luthier group in Seattle somewhere or maybe it is Tacoma. So I am guessing there are some folks around here somewhere. Anybody know where or how to contact someone?

You're certainly in the right place. While I'm sure that many would be willing to talk with you, I'd suggest you start with a specific question, and let us all learn from the great responses you'll get.

If you don't know where to get started, one topic might be "What's your favorite book or text for building your first guitar?" You'll get a lot of responses to that one.

I'd also suggest you join either ASIA or Guild of American Luthiers. They're both relatively inexpensive and a great opportunity to meet other luthiers at their events. There might also be a local group of luthiers in your area, to visit, share techniques, etc.

This forum about as "One on One" as you can get. You will almost always get a reply to any question...no matter how stupid you MIGHT THINK your question is....we have all had our own STUPID FEELING questions answered here.
I got semi involved with a luthier group in Colorado after joining this forum and have gotten a lot of great info. visiting members on line and in person.

Chuck, If I remember correctly, Rick Davis lives in the Seattle area. He would be a great guy to visit. He and his wife are both luthiers and I think they even give classes. You might try looking him up.

Thanks for the information. I checked and they are both in Seattle. I will try to stop by, call first, and see what they have going. it looks like they used to have classes but there is nothing posted for this year. I will do some more checking.
