Which online forum do you think is the best for tips for beginners on Marquetry

I aquired a lot of veneers and my brother in law is wanting to learn more about Marquetry.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dennis

Check out http://www.luthiercom.org, which is The Luthier Community. It is a very build oriented forum with a number of guitar builds and some marquetry tutorials. I know I did one on making wheat, and in my build 4, I did a good bit on making the little blocks like this

Also, I'm pretty sure Haans did one on making the little slanted chevron type purfling. There are probably others too.

BTW, someone told me that the kind of stuff we do, inlay and all of that is really Parquetry, yet Marquetry can be a part of Parquetry. Seriously. :)

Thanks Waddy.... I did also find this link http://www.wood-veneers.com/index1.htm that had a lot of useful information.

Hey Mark can you explain the differences?

Mark who? oops_sign

Not sure I can. But I will try. Marquetry seems to involve the building up of smaller materials into some pattern (like my purfling bar in another thread) or Waddy's nice stuff above. Waddy uses bundles of sticks to create a pattern you can see at the end (like that W and T pattern). Now slicing it into "inlay" pieces appears to create parquetry pieces that are inlayed into coutouts and grooves in the final product. Remember parquet floors? Like the Boston Celtics? I think for it to be called parqetry, there has to be some pattern to the inlay, otherwise its just inlay.

Wikipedia has some good definitions.

And, I was just playing around by making the distinction. [:Y:]

Dennis,

Try The American Marquetry Society, or The Marquetry Society (in England), or join the "marquetry" group at groups.yahoo.com (they are active and answer lots of questions there). As a last resort, you could PM me with your questions - I've been doing marquetry pictures for years (currently I'm the webmaster for the AMS).

Cheers,
Dave F.
