Thanks for everyone's imput on the Grizzly 5 hp 17 inch bandsaw. I had made up my mind to buy it. But along came the Laguna 24 inch 5 hp bandsaw for less money. It is used, but like brand new. You can't imagine how smooth this baby operates. A find and only 60 miles from my home.

So I get to brag a little for a great purchase.

Ken-
Good find!
You will love your Laguna, I'm sure.
I own the much smaller HD16 and it is a good tool.
With some of the money you 'saved' you could consider a Driftmaster fence - not perfect, but I find it useful.
(And some good carbide blades, and....it never ends!)

Cheers

Hey! I take exception with that! pfft The driftmaster IS perfect. What may be a bit imperfect is the price. However, I got mine on sale and shipped to my house for $275. Not so bad. What would make it even more perfect would be some kind of Wixey Digital Scale.

Nice find on the laguna... what did u pay if u dont mind me asking? That thing will cut logs...

Mike (btw, you don't brag, you gloat, and gloat you should)

<<<<< Jealous

Nice find for sure. I've been trying to find a used Aggazani or Laguna with no luck. Maybe when the economy gets a little worse one will come along. Hahaha. I doubt it

Great choice, good buy. Going to a heavier bandsaw is ALWAYS good. Light grade bandsaws flex vertically from wheel to wheel, there is frankly never the right blade or tension, they cannot hold steady. Most affordable band saws are constructed of welded steel frames with copious at best construction (think of a poorly fit X-brace), the laguna you purchased is quite stout, I have set one up for a fellow woodworker who needed true resaw capability as I do, but did not have the space nor $ for a horizontal. Congrats, T.

Awesome score. I love my 16", you probably paid around the same for yours. Wish I could of got one used but there is not much of a used tool market up here.

I worry a lot more about upper wheel axis deflection than column bending for the sort of stuff that I do, but any deflection can be an issue for some cuts. On the last numbers I saw for 18" saws (2004...time for update), there was not a good correlation between sourcing and measured deflection for wheel-edge loading. From low to high:

Bridgwood (Italian): .0145"
Grizzly (Asian): .0153"
General (Asian): .0175"
Agazzani (Italian): .0213"
Laguna (Italian): .0335"
Rikon (Asian): .0338"
Jet (Asian): .0698"

Note that the Grizz value was less than half of the Laguna (about the same as the Rikon), and that the Jet was twice the Rikon.

OK, now I get to gloat!! I picked up the saw today. We loaded it up on a stake truck with a lift on the back. Not that important for loading since the sellers place had a dock high door. But it will work great for getting it to ground level and into my shop. That takes place tomorrow morning with the help of my son-in-law. Now the good part. The seller also loaded a three hp Powermatic Dust Collector on with the saw. Said he didn't need it any more and it would work great with the saw. Price - getting it out of his building. It needs new bags, but I plugged it in and the thing seems to work fine. Gloat, Gloat, Gloat!! A very good day all around!!
