Post subject:  No OM Plans

Hi

I am starting number two (number one not finished yet).

Unlike number one which is a kit number two will be from scratch, it will be another OM. I have the mold and I have built the side bending form from a template taken from the mold. I don't have any plan for bracing - I am assuming that as long as I get the location of the sound hole and bridge correct in relation to the scale length the bracing should fit around that. I am going to cut my X brace lap joint at 98 degrees.

Am I going in the right direction or way off ?

John I am working on #4 at the present wich is an OM. My previous 3 instruments were dreads and based way too loosely on a set of plans from Jim Williams an Aussi builder. I thought I could easily mix and match ideas from other plans and patterns on builder's websites because I liked the sound of that particular builder's guitars. How wrong I was. gaah I realise now it really was just a hit and miss approach.Mostly miss. I will concede however that along with much frustration and an often sore forarm(shaving braces through the soundhole) I did learn some valuable lessons. My advice is to get hold of a proven plan and don't stray too far from the detail and dimensions shown. I think you will almost certainly end up with something you enjoy playing. I know Michael Payne has drawn OM plans which I hope to use in the future. I'm pretty sure John Hall from Blues Creek Guitars would also be able to help you. Also do yourself a favour and take lots of notes along the way so you can move forward with each build.

Regards

Craig.
