Carved two necks for my first double m&t's, finally figured out how to consistantly make a volute...
By the by, why do you lose tooting privelages just 'cause you started the thread?

I spent most of the weekend trying to find the shop floor , after wich i sat and worked on mandola # 4 for a while setting the fret board and putting the pearl inlays in the side of the neck instead of the top of the fret board .

As for tooting your own horn , weeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllll if i wanna start a thread and toot me own horn first , then those who are not horn tooters need to plug their ears pfft laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

OK, I'll toot my horn.

It was 96 yesterday, so I stayed in the shop with the AC going.

Got the chechen bindings cleaned up on this 12-fret L-00, put on a wash coat of shellac, got the frets in, not yet dressed.

Brilliant minds think alike...could be my #1 if my work had been a little cleaner! Assume we'll see a separate thread for the glamour shots?
Thanks very much for the compliment. Mine is a 00. It looks real good from a distance. But up close and personal, it becomes more clear ... that it was my first time doing french polish. I'll let more weeks go by and then perhaps I'll hit it with oil/pumice/felt block.

I took the kids to Dutch Wonderland !

But since I have not posted on one of these threads in about a month -

I built two new necks, carved and glued up - and today I routed the shape and the slots and build a nice jig for the tuner holes. I fixed one error so far... looking forward to tackling my second neck tomorrow morning and then finally getting aroudn to building the box ! - will post pics once I get around to start the box build.

I made a new set of dovetail routing templates for the body/neck.

I also bound a ukelele I am finishing for a friend. it is a Honduras Rosewood and Englemann Spruce tenor sized uke.

I applied the 1st 2 coats of Z-poxy on #8 a Cocobolo D with Adi top and sanded out. The wash coat went on this morning so I should be able to set up my temporary spray booth and start the lacquer real soon.

Chris cool is great isn't it, maybe your songs will be less angry now, maybe a cool shop Blues would work.

I glued my new radius dishes to MDF and then lined them with 80 grit. I also started building a mold for my first build. Almost finished with that last night, but still have a bit more to go.

I suppose I also made a large amount of saw dust, which took forever to clean up. 5 mins of cutting = 20 mins to clean up. Really efficient. I envy those with the fancy vacuum setups. I have a shopvac on the list, but this weekend I actually hooked up the Dyson to to my drill press spindle sander using a bunch of duct tape. I should have taken a picture as it looked rather hilarious, but I would be far to embarrassed to actually post it. :) I highly doubt the wife allows that sort of activity to continue.

I routed the binding and purfling channels on my 2 guitars I am building: L-00 and Jumbo this weekend. Was hoping to glue the binding/purfling in before I left tomorrow on a 10 day Business trip, but didn't get the time.

As a personal test, I subjected myself to a building marathon from Saturday morning through Sunday evening. I never felt the sunshine all weekend...much of it was behind rain clouds anyway. Here's what I accomplished:

1) Prepped & glued on the top of a HRW/Adi 00-12 fret
2) Bent sides and glued neck & tail blocks for a Curly Mahogany OM
3) Thicknessed & joined Mahog. back
4) Routed pocket and added a coco backstrip to the Curly Mahogany back
5) Milled back braces and glued them in place.
6) After #2 glue dried, added fabric side bracing and glued in all kerfed lining.
7) Milled up Cocobolo bindings and glued on B/W purfling
8) Glued up a layup for mahogalam.
9) Glued up a 5 piece neck block
10) Shaped back braces

And I almost had enough time to glue the back to the rim. It's amazing how efficient we can become when we put our minds to it.

Wow JJ, you went at it! I glued up the neck to a box on a F5C and glued the F/B on. The majority of my fun was drawing out a Prairie State style 18" super jumbo!

I have finally experienced the joy of voicing a top :) It's still a little on the heavy side, but I'll be shaving a little more after I get the sides glued on. I've had a taste of how the sound changes as you remove wood in the free plate form, so now I want to hear it in the "drum" form, where the edges of the plate are restricted as they will be on the final instrument.

The tap tone is still very different depending on whether you smack it in an open area or over part of the X brace. Open areas make the lowest pitch, the lower bass side arm of the X is 3 semitones above that, and treble arm and X joint are 2 semitones above that. The tone bars and fingers at least seem to be more even sounding with the open areas, after shaving down the "tight" spots.

All glued up with hide glue, hence the shiny coat before things were glued on, to make sure it was nice and soaked into the plate wood and give the brace something to stick to. X is 3/4 inch at the joint, plus a bit for the cap. UTB is about 1 inch or a hair less at the center.

Not much time this weekend but I've been getting some necks ready. One is for a repair job on a 12-string electric. Next I need to slot the pile of fretboards sitting there.

In the shop?? Absolutely nothing. However, a trip to a friends cabin in New Hampshire revealed large stashes of cherry logs and what I think may be Eastern Spruce. Gotta do more research on those. Now, if I go get some logs, who wants to help me process it. I don't think my 9" bandsaw will do the trick [:Y:]

Started binding the F holes on an archtop. One of my least favorite tasks, although one of my favorite things to admire after I've hopefully done a clean job.

I spent the weekend lookig at houses with the wife. She wants a new house and I want a shop at home. I've lost count on the number of places we have seen. House hunting sucks!
