After 4 long months number one finally has strings. Martin style Dread. Sitca Top. Hog back and sides. Minwax wipe on poly finish. Tru-oil neck. Man it feels good and sounds good too. Good sustain, loud, and clear. Couldn't have done it without help from you fine folks. This was not a kit by the way. Bought a martin neck and fret board, but the rest was done my me, mistakes and all. ![]() Found almost everything I needed to know in the archives. It pays to do a little searching. Big thanks to John Mayes for the drum sander! WOOHOO, now on to #00002 |

Nice work man. I love tru oil, I used to refinish my guitars with it after buying a Seagull and falling in love with the feel of the matte neck years ago. Of course that was before I could really afford tools and had adequate space to build. I've been planning on doing my necks like that for a while. How did the rest of the finish turn out? I still haven't decided yet on a finish for the top, sides and backs of my players. FP is so nice and responsive, but seems pretty easy to screw up. Especially on a guitar that is going to be handled daily. |

Joey, I'm not very happy with the finish. I will learn to spray or farm it out for #2. The Wipe on poly is supposed to be dry and ready to recoat in 6 hours. I found you need to wait about 24-36 hours. It is a gloss finish but doesn't pop like I had hoped. It would be great for furniture but I won't use it again on a guitar. |

#2 is going to be a slope shoulder dread. Alaskan cedar top, sapele back and sides, very simple zipflex rosette, zipflex purfling. Looking for suggestions for binding???? I will probably continue to buy necks for now, until I feel I have the body construction down pat. Thanks for all the compliments. Tim |

That's a nice looking guitar, especially for a first. You might just want to go ahead and try the neck. They aren't as hard as some folks think. |

Anyway......I like the ambition and optimism associated with five digit serial numbers. You go, Tim. |

Way to go Tim88! Nothing like stringing up your first or second or.......... you get the picture. I bet it sounds great. IMHO do your own neck. I find it the most gratifying part of the build. Just be careful not to leave it to thick. I just bought a Nickleson #49 but have done 4 necks with a Four in Hand rasp. They work great. http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.a ... at=1,42524 Have Fun, Danny |

you'll have to build faster! If you take 4 months for every one, your first digit will turn to 1 in... 3333 years. ![]() |
