Here is another great set of Cuban Mahogany with nice ribbon figure. We are getting to the bottom of the stack of this so if you want one of these you might want to grab it now. This set is large enough for a dreadnaught. Retail value is $160, but a bid of $120 ends the auction early and gets free domestic shipping. The auction ends tomorrow (WEDNESDAY) at 3PM EST. Good Luck |

Hi Fillipo, The Cuban mahogany is much denser than all the other types-actually rings when tapped-instead of thuds. |

Filippo Morelli wrote: Link Van Cleave wrote: Brock, I will take that. Link Sweet set at a nice price. Any plans on what you're doing with that Mahogany, Link? How is Cuban different from South American mahoganies? Filippo Hey Filippo, A OM sized instrument. Will be a few builds down the road. The only thing I know about it as a guitar wood is what I have read. I don't have any experience with it. I have always wanted some for furniture. For me it is one of the holy grail woods as far as wood goes. (not necessarily for guitars) I used to read Krenov's accounts of Andaman paduk , Rio rosewood and cuban mahogany. The holy trinity of woods. Cuban mahogany is the real mahogany. I have studied it's history. (they used to burn it for fuel in the sugar plantations ! ![]() Plus, My name is Link and I am wood aholic. Plus, I love that vertical grain and I though this was a nice set. Looks pretty straight. So now I have some Cuban. ![]() L. |

I got a couple 2x2 squares of this Cuba stuff for making 1 or 2 laminated+spliced necks. Reportedly imported in England, from Jamaica, in 1908. If not true, one of the owners must have kept them buried in dirt for some years, but anyway. The density is just a bit under Indian rosewood. Wonderful intense color, microscopic pores. Makes the other hog-wannabes look like glued-up straws ![]() |

If you live in Florida, you can find this wood occasionally. I bought several pcs of the stuff from some guys in Miami to build furniture. It is amazing and the texture/pore is so much finer you can easily see why it has such a legend. This was hurricane salvaged. These pcs were from logs over 20 to 30 inches thru, (but maybe growing that far south the logs grow quick).Just thought I would post this so people near south florida would make sure and know it can be found there. |
