Guitar Wood...the obsession...how to start?

Post subject:  Guitar Wood...the obsession...how to start?
I want to start amassing a small stock of guitar wood. From my woodworking hobby I know where to get the american furniture woods, maple, cherry, oak, etc; but the tropical stuff in guitar quality just isn't avaliable in my area (WV, USA). I don't like to buy wood sight unseen and prefer to pick my own boards. So my question is where do you guys buy your wood? Do you buy in quantitiy? Where do I get boards to saw my own? What should I stay away from? Is there anywhere in the PA, WV, OH, MD area that you know of that I can go and choose boards?

Tell me guys where to I get the stuff I need for this habit? 8-)

Closer to Baltimore - World of Hardwoods - lots of mahogany, Honduran and others, different kinds of walnut, paduk, and a bunch of cuts of exotics that are small for furniture, ut just fine for guitars. I recently got a great piece of Bolivian that I expect to get 2 sets out of for $50.00 -

Here in the DC metro area, there are at least a dozen sources of exotics within 30 miles of DC...Vienna Hardwoods (McLean, VA), Colonial Hardwoods (Springfield, VA), Exotic Hardwoods (Gaithersburg, MD), Hardwoods, Inc (Frederick, MD), Northland Forest Products (Manassas, VA), as well as a couple Woodcraft carryinf turning squares and a couple others I'd have to work to recall. Southern PA has a bunch more. Lots of coco, ebony, etc. Picked up a $28 stick of cco at one of these locations and got nearly 18 sets of some very handsome binding out of it, plus a couple headstock plates and bridges.

I purchased a 22"x14"x2" blank of Honduras mahogany online from Northridge Hardwoods that I'm very pleased with. It's my first purchase from them and I'll go back. StewMac has a good reputation and, from what I've read, has a good return policy and excellent customer support.

Todd thanks, I am headed back to DC shortly. My interest is primarily in exotic billets.

Hearne's is great and they usually have a wide range of stuff, but they are aware of us luthiers as a market and tend to cut their guitar-appropriate wood into sets themselves these days. Finding an appropriate billet of something like Koa there these days is tough. The exception is figured English Sycamore, which they always seem to have a boatload of, and can fill your desire for Maple forever.

I've never been to Groff and Groff - an overcite.

Don't do it!!!! You can never have too much guitar wood!!! Once you start, you will never be able to stop!! Like the worst drug habit. Save your marriage! Stop before it's too late!!!!!!
