This is why we old-timers/hippies would coil the ends of the strings into the little circles which hover over the tuner shafts. BB King speaks of tying on an end to repair a broken string in one of his many interviews. Sure, the tone quality suffers, but you can keep playing until... |

I also used to coil my strings into circles at the tuners as, in my case, when a string broke it was usually above the nut. A simple non slip reef knot with some of that spare length did the trick. Some of my friends used to laugh at me but I found no shame in doing this as money was tight (still is!) and I couldn't afford to buy a new set. Another thing I did was when the strings started to get dull I would carefully take them off, coil them up,and boil in a sauce pan with some vim to get rid of the grease and dirt. You'd be amazed at how bright they sounded when put back on, almost like new!....well for maybe a week or so....  Bill S. |

I still do that. If I break a new string by accident and it's above the nut with enough room I'll tie it off in a square not. Stays in tune for ever once the not is set. I wouldn't do that on a customers guitar of course but for my own, sure why not? As long as there is plenty of life left in the string. I hardly break them these days anyway. |
