The mini-concert videos from the Newport Guitar Festival are slowly surfacing on YouTube. This one of Paul Asbell playing my Headwaters guitar in bearclaw sitka and ziricote has just appeared.

The sound quality in this recording is just so-so. The bass notes sound pretty muddy, which is not representative of the way they sound in real life at all. This guitar has a bigger-than-you-might-expect quality of bass for it's small size (14" lower bout), but the bass is clear and defined, not muddy at all.

This is a quote from Paul about this guitar:
“When I first play an unfamiliar guitar, I’m fishing for what it wants to do. With this guitar, it’s easy to find a lot of things it does well – it’s very versatile. I can play jazz, blues, a variety of fingerstyle material, with or without picks… it all sounds good. There’s also something in the trebles that reminds me of a good archtop guitar – a fat, meaty tone that you don’t get from a lot of flattop guitars. Plus, I can play it hard with no sense of running out of headroom. It’s great to be able to use such a wide dynamic range, and Todd’s guitars thrive on being pushed.”

Thanks for looking & listening! Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have about the guitar or whatever.

Boy it does have some bass for a little one doesn't it. [clap]
Sounds incredible.
Does it have a pick up or is it just through the mike?

Sweet guitar Todd! Looks like 15 or 16 fret to the soundboard, or is it just me?

Thanks, Tim! No pickup, just the one mic.

I'm on dial-up, too, Mike. I hardly ever try to watch anything on YouTube unless I'm somewhere with a high-speed connection. I did download this one at home, though, and it took hours. There's another video on YouTube of Michael Chapdelaine playing a different one of my guitars at Newport, but I haven't downloaded it yet.

I've decided not to pursue being an exhibitor at Woodstock this year. Maybe next year. There's a small chance I'll come just to attend, but I don't know. I take it you'll be there?

Thanks, Chuck! Yes - 15 frets to the body. That and the elevated FB give quite good access to all the upper frets. Meanwhile, the unusual body shape with the high waist and hips puts the bridge at the widest part of the lower bout, lending the guitar something of the special rich quality that 12-fretters have, and, I think, contributing to the "bigness" of the sound. On the other hand, it has a lot in common with other guitars of a similar size. Though I do feel it is truly a very versatile guitar (it meant a lot to me to have a player of Paul's caliber and versatility say the same thing), it has a lot of that great, classic "blues box" kind of voice. Not too "boxy", though, due to the side soundport, which opens up the sound.

Rather nervy of me to bump this, I know, but the thread with photos of this guitar is still active, and I think some of the folks commenting on that thread have missed this video.
