Well, after the re-topping and such, finally got some finish on #5. You've all seen it before, but it looks a bit better with a bit of a shine on it. Much like the others in timbre and voice. It has more bass, and a bit more growl in the open E and A strings, but does not seem to have lost anything in the trebles. Same overtones and sparkle. I'm hoping that the "growl" will settle down a bit after it breaks in a little. It did on #4. It's still pretty new. I have only played it a few hours. Thanks for looking! |

Awesome colors! I wish I'd had the guts to try coco myself. FP on the top truly looks great - quite impressive! I don't approve the race strip - V joint combo but oh well, not sure I could convince you to change the neck after changing the top  What about using a pure concave shape for the heel profile as opposed to the slight S ? |

Oh, Alex, you're such a stick in the mud! Reach out, live a little. Think outside the box! Thanks, though, I'm reasonably happy with the outcome. Part of the reason for the 5 piece neck, is trying to salvage a Sp Cedar neck billet that warped on me. I had to plane it down to flat and square then cut it up. So far, I'm only getting two necks out of it, and they are both 5 piecers. The new one will be a little more subtle. Single Rosewood strip with fine Maple on both sides, going into the V. Marvelous! The top is mesmerizing and the craftsmanship is tops. That is a wonder FP finish and I wonder how much the cocobolo complicated keeping all of the light-colored wood clean. |

It looks great ! Your work sure is an inspiration for me and I am sure for others ! Did you shellac the inside a little bit ? One critique though - it seems like the headstock slots are less perfect than the rest of the guitar - how are you cutting the slots ? It may be the picture angle also or just my eyes. Not sure if anyone else sees what I am seeing. The ramp on the treble side seems to reach a tab more to the nut, and the top of the slots seems they are a hair wider than the slot.... again the work is excellent - I am just trying to offer some critique - how about a sound sample ! |

You are probably right, John. The whole headstock is done by hand. I do drill the slots with a Forstner bit, but then I finish them out by hand, with chisels, files, and sandpaper. I'm sure they aren't perfect. Good points, though. I should be more accurate on the headstock, particularly on the slots, since they are so visible. Steve, I tried to be careful to seal the light wood with a Q-tip with shellac before I started any other finishing. I still had to scrape a few places after I started. I always see stuff that I should fix when I'm taking pictures, too, and there are a number of them. I'll try to be more conservative, Alex!  Thanks all. |

Waddy, As you know i have two in production now and I know at least one of them needs extensive headstock/slots work - we'll see how those turn out. |

Will done Waddy I like the Coco with the lacewood bindings. Your attention to detail is good, as for the headstock slots it is a hand made guitar and some variation is to be tolerated. I heard the the Cremona masters made every violin a little different as it was all hand saws scrapers and chisels, no maxi $ LMI and Stewmac jigs. ![[:Y:]](./images/smilies/smiley20.gif "Thumbs Up") Fred |

Lookin' good! Your rosettes have really come into their own. I've got to get around to that someday. So, are you going to stick with the basic Romanillos design, or are you motivated yet to try something else? |

Jim: I only use the 20th for testing. The reason I put it is that a couple of players asked me if I ever thought of it. I hadn't , and thought I'd try it. I liked the look, and kept doing it. The guy who has my #3, uses it. There are a few pieces that call for it, but many players transpose it out. I wouldn't put it on a commission unless someone wanted it. And, yes, I think I'm going to keep building the Romanillos style. I like the small body, and the bracing, and it has a unique voice, that appeals to me. I will have to try some others though. This is a great looking guitar! Waddy. Congratz on successfully re-topping the #5. The new tops looks really good under FP. I like the rosette too. Personanly I prefer if the heel cap is at the same level as the back; I think adding 1 or 2 more layers on the heel cap will bring it to be same level as the back. But the heel cap sure matches the back very well though. |
