Post subject: | OLF SJ 12 String |
A client asked me to do a 12 string for her and she loves the shape of the olf sj body. She hates the larger body of a lot of the 12 strings out there. With some slight modifications can that shape de done in a 12 string?? Thanks Gary |

The general advice over the years has been to increase the top's thickness by ~10% and the bracing height by ~25%. Never did an SJ 12 but I built a slope-shouldered Dred and was successful by using 5/16" wide x-bracing @ 5/8" tall at the intersection. The top was quite stiff but I still left it about 10% thicker than its sister 6 string dred. I also beefed up the bridge plate to compensate for the extra pull and extra holes. |

Thanks for the tips, I have a bit of time before I do it, Gary |

I am sure it would work fine. In addition to JJ's comments I would also make the FOOTPRINT of the bridge plate bigger too, and make sure you brace the sound hole well. I would use a secondary patch and heavier braces around the hole. |

My best guitar acoustically was an OLF SJ 12 string. My own bracing though. Here it is ![]() Graham Nash playing it ![]() The bracing Yes typically they are built a bit beefier. But my top of Shanes lutz was 0.090 That may seem thin for you but the way I build this is actually a bit thicker and stiffer than my typical OLF SJ. I did use 2 carbon fiber rods down the neck for added stiffness with the increased string tension. My X brace height was 0.65" before the cap. |
