Post subject:  Marking Fretboards for Inlay

For dots, marking is easy, make a ding right in the center and choose the appropriate bit to drill a correct size hole with which to place the dot, but how do I get a more extravagant inlay, like something one would find on a Gibson, to stay put in exactly the right spot while I trace around it to find out where to cut? Also, what should I use to trace around the inlay with?

I would add to the above, rub some chalk dust into the scribed lines prior to routing as this will enable you to see the the pattern much better.
