I have very old Euro that is nice but it does NOT compare to Shanes Lutz.
It's lite ,stiff,and alive!
And available !

I have never used Lutz spruce before. How does it compare to other spruces specifically when used for Classical guitars? |

Lutz is an hybrid species, it cames from hybridization of Sitka and Englemann (or white Spruce). It's a great top wood. I would personnaly go with cedar, redwood or some soft spruce like englemann for a classical, but it's just a matter of taste! Francis |

I recently sent Robert Ruck 10 sets he waited a good long while for. Following his examination of those sets he ordered a bunch more (more than the original 10 sets). There are number good/great classical makers on this board that have found success in Lutz as well. Guys like my buddy Michael Collins. And just for clarification, Lutz will almost always be a Sitka/White Spruce hybrid, no Engelmann in the mix as has been suggested in other places. Engelmann is just too high in elevation in the area that this wood is harvested and those high elevation spruce trees (in excess of 3,500 feet) tend to be too small and twisty for good tonewood. I'd go by the density: if it's reasonably light, the species doesn't seem to matter. I've had good luck with low density Sitka, and White, so I don't see why Lutz should be different. |

Recently completed 2 classicals ('37 Hausers) using Lutz and am VERY pleased with the results. Will definitely use it again on classicals.... |

My two Lutz Classicals came out great. I found that I have to adapt for cross grain stiffness, as the tops I've used have been a bit less stiff cross grain than the Euro tops I've used. However, the results have bee very good. No reason not to build with it. It also looks awesome. Attachment: P1040280 (Large).JPG
