I'm working on my 1st steel string guitar (a parlor) after building a half-dozen classicals. In his book, Kinkead drills a hole through the upper-bout transverse brace to gain easy access to the truss rod adjustment: a long hex wrench would allow adjustment without having to put your hand into the body. With the small sound hole of the parlor, this approach seems appealing. On the other hand, putting a hole through the brace does not seem like a good idea structurally. Anyone have experience with this issue? ![]() |

Steve: The UTB is quite a large brace. I find that the hole ends up somewhere near the middle of the brace. With compression on top and tension on the bottom there is very little force acting on the middle of the brace where the hole is located. This has been done on thousands of guitars and not been a problem that I know. Tom |

Depending on the size of the hex the distance between the UTB and TR, there is a wrench available from High Mountain I believe that may work without drilling the hole? MM |

I use either a maple brace or laminated spruce/rosewood/spruce and drill a 5/16" hole at the appropriate depth...usually about 3/32" from the spruce top. |
