I need to make a three piece back like a D-35 (I think). Does anyone know the width at the skinny end and the width at the fat end?
I'm thinking it would be best to have all three pieces covered at least a little bit by the neck block. I think I also read somewhere that three piece backs have a tendency to require neck resets sooner. Any thoughts?
Thanks

What I would do is to lay it out on paper and pick the most visually pleasing slope. Another factor is your available material. Fwiw I would resort to 3 piece when I have an undersized set and an orphan side/wide FB to stick in between. Or, wide sides that have a knot or other issue in one of the thirds are perfect candidates for the back.

As for the neck reset thing, will I sound arrogant if I say it is the most ridiculous luthier-made-claim heard in the past 6 mo? :)

Visually I like to make the end of the middle piece end up the same width as the neck heel.

Maybe, but I've heard some pretty ridiculous stuff in the last 6 months. wow7-eyes

When doing wedges on the back I prefer the understated. Something like an inch wide at the neck block and an inch and a half at the tail block.

But....I've done other crazy things too..........like this.....
