This may be a true newbie question but is there a shelf life on 190 proof Everclear for shellac purposes? Trying to decide how much to get and I have a three year old unopened bottle . Don't even remember why I had it but it is definitely Everclear 190. Will it be fine after three years if kept tightly sealed? Thanks.

I don't think you'll have any issues. As far as I know, it doesn't go bad.

Keep it forever or at least your lifetime.

I started to say PJ but figured it was a regional thing. There's still a place in Ocean Drive, SC where the grass will not grow after my introduction to it 40 years ago

There was a time when the only question I would have had about Everclear is where is the punchbowl. Who would have thought thirty years later I still have questions about Everclear. Funny how a bottle can evoke so many fun memories and bad memories all at the same time. Don't all of you guys act like you don't know what I'm talking about. Seriously thanks for the information.

It will last until your kids become teenagers.

Around my shop the Everclear disappears much faster than the amount used on the instrument would indicate. Hmmmm ?????? idunno

That is rough. Have you considered keeping something around that's a little mellower for the occasional libation. I'm partial to a sip of Bushmill's upon occasion. The everclear is strictly for shellac.

Steve, I'm an Irish whiskey fan. Try Redbreast! Are we way off topic here?

Randy - does the whiskey enhance the amber coloration in the cured shellac? ;)

P.J.?? Now how's I live in North Carolina for two years and miss the introduction to that acronym? What does PJ stand for?

I wouldn't want to be banned for using names that are deemed religious in nature, preceded by the word Purple.

We had something in college called Green GD... it involved Everclear, 12 packs of PBR, limeaid (frozen), trashcans, & ice. For the same reasons Waddy mentioned, I will not explain the name. But this is diverging from the original OP's intent.

Everclear, in a sealed or occasionaly opened bottle will outlast cockroaches. In fact, its a great way to embalm cockroaches.

Back to the original question, it doesn't go bad, but it will take on water out of the atmosphere over time. So it will get a little weaker as it gets older. Probably not a big issue because it will still work for french polishing.

It has a half-life of forever if unsealed.
