This might be of interest to some of you. I just built this simple little fixture after getting some ideas from the "bloodwood binding" thread. I wanted to laminate my binding while in it's final shape so this is what I came up with. It's just two pieces of 3/4" ply, one cut int the shape of the f hole the other is just the base. I cut notches in the corners to hold the excess binding. Dave Stewart I'm sure already did this   .

I will gladly accept donations! I meant to mention this before. The reason I used 3/4" ply is so you would have room to accomodate the arch. If you start the binding high and bend it around and down you are also "roughing in" the lateral arch. You can see what I mean in the first pic. It doesn't get it perfect but it sure gets it close. |

Interesting setup, Jason. Have you considered making flat patterns of the various pieces so they will "elevate" when wrapped around the form? I do that but am using sheet material rather than precut strips of binding. The strips would be 1/4" wide or whatever required to trim flush after installing. Nelson |

Nelson, I'm not sure I get what you mean. What would the flat patterns be patterns of? Also, where do you get your sheets and how do you laminate and trim them to your final dimensions? Thanks. |

Jason If you envision a piece of f-hole binding that has been glued in place and then sanded flush with the inside and outside surfaces of the top plate: If you could unglue it and then unroll it back to it's flat state it would become a flat pattern from which more could be made. Then, when you install them into the f-hole, they would follow the elevations around the shape of the f-hole. I find that having the strips near net shape results in better miter joints rather than dealing with a strip that is, say, 1/2" wide before mitering. I "cheated" by developing the flat patterns using digitizing on the CNC then cutting the flat patterns out of sheet stock. I used to get ABS sheet from Leathertone but they sold out to another company. I can find that new company for you. Nelson |

OK, I get you. That definately sounds like it would lead to less fussing when it comes to gluing them on. I've been using 1/4" binding, which is part of the reason I hate binding f-holes.....lots of fussing to get them to follow all of the many curves and not have them slide above or below the top. |

Yeah, with 1/4" strips a person has to try bending it the hard way and that leads to less than perfect results. I'll bet a guy could just take a 1/2" (or so) width of strip and hold it in place in the f-hole while marking the flat pattern. I've used heavy paper come to think of it. Keep in mind that the flat pattern shortens as you add more layers of binding. |
