Post subject:  3 piece sides???

I have some leftover bubinga , not wide enough for a 3 in tenor uke side. Thought of gluing a center piece of 3/32in soft white maple between the 2 pieces of bubinga to make a 3.5 in tenor uke side. I have never done this before. Anyone out there been there and done that?. If so what glue did you use? without the joint falling apart on the heater. I have a watlow heating blanket and the old fashioned luthiers alum elec pipe . I use a laminated outside mold for bending. I have some tough white glue, titebond ,system 3 epoxy hide glue etc. etc thanks.

HHG will do it but you can't really introduce much water, for obvious reasons. Powdered resin glue (sometimes called the boat builders glue) is waterproof and can take serious heat.

Polyurethane glue works as the heat or moisture won't affect it. The joints need to be perfect.

If you decide to go with a polyurethane, choose Elmers instead of Gorilla. Elmers is thinner and takes a little longer to cure, which gives you more time to spread it around. It also foams less, and dries harder than Gorilla.

These are not the only kinds of PU glue out there, of course, but they are all I have experience with.

Can you use system 3 epoxy?? or would the 250 deg heat force the 3 piece side to delaminate??

It don't take much heat to separate an epoxy joint so, I don't think it's a good idea.
I've been told that polyurethane is good for glue side purflings.

Check with David LaPlante. He bent a set of sides with a meander pattern glued between two other pieces. He backed the strip with paper inside the guitar, to give some strength to the joint while bending. Not exactly sure what kind of paper. Most likely not notebook paper or copy paper! :D

David used Hide for that, although he bent on an iron (I think). The problem with spritzing the sides and placing them in a side bender is that the moisture is contained a little. That might be enough to delaminate the sides. The powdered resin glue will work. I know because I used to glue up purflings and bandings with the stuff. They were then left to soak in a bath before being taken to a hot iron. They never delaminated. It's a waterproof glue, hence why the boat builders use it. From what I remember of my tests it can also take some serious heat, as I found out when I tried to reverse a joint.
The other alternative is to bend each piece individually and join them after. Realistically you will need a mould to do that though. It's the method that was used to build Baroque Guitars with multiple strips to the Sides.

Thanks mike I prefer the resin glue over the poly. Have used the resin glue to construct 10ply veneers of 1/8in red oak around a form to make arm bows for welsh stick chairs. Have used the poly, and frankly don/tlike to use it , unless it/s for carpentry work. Will skip the HHG as I prefer to bend my sides over a form with a watlow heater , quicker and can do 2 sides at 1 time.

By yourself! 8-)
It does in fact work, but pay attention to what the different woods are telling you.

HHG and Fish will work. This glue will reset . Experiment and try it. I use HHG and Fish to glue purfling to binding and bend it. CA will also work if you don't use a lot of heat.

I have used Titebond III to glue side purflings to binding and then bent them in a side bender with no delamination problems.
