looking for ideas on how to cut the armrest bevel brace with repeatable results...either by router or bandsaw ??? I am trying a method I saw on the Mimf forum using a bandsaw today..but it still requires some freehand work..

You probably will need a CNC or some time consuming to make router jigs or make one and then and use a duplicator to copy but handwork will also be needed. It also depends if you are making a Laskin or Ryan style. I couldn't quite get my head around that bandsaw method. For some reason I found it difficult to cut a curve with the table at 45 degrees. I've pretty much used Todd L.'s method of cutting the insert and shaping the underside on the belt sander and ruffing it out on the top side. Then finishshaping it when glued up. Whenever I do the next one I'm just going to glue it in with the top side left square and just shape it files and whatever in place. If doing a Laskin style just route it in place and hand finish the ends by hand to your liking. I think Tony Karol has a tut on it out there somewhere on MIMF and maybe one here. Making the bevel is the easy part. I find binding it and purf treatment can be the difficult part depending on the way you go with it. |

the article is by Joseph Gabriel on the MIMF I just used the search function for armrest...seems dooable but havent tried it yet...he tilts the table 35 degrees... |

Let me know how it goes. It just had some things in it that weren't clear to me like the return curve and the spacing thing. Like I said I couldn't get my head around it , must of been having brain farts or something that day. If you have success with it maybe you can make a tut video on it so I can understand it better. It's been awhile ago and I prefer the Ryan style these days. I'm always up for learning technics.

I simply glue the block in square, and then do the inside bevel with a gouge chisel .. takes about 15 minutes and its always what you want. Leaving it square makes it way easier to glue on in the first place. When using a figured piece that will show thru (one of my older methods and treatments), I carve it with a small kutzall bit in a dremel .. again 15-20 minutes. |
