I have no idea, I shot some Lacquer on the small piece around one year ago. Maybe Koa?

It could even be Acacia, and not necessarily Koa.

Walnut has a very distinctive smell, so if it smells like Walnut (the wood, not the nut), then it's walnut.

I can't describe its smell, but you'll know its there. If you can't smell it try cutting or sanding it.

Thanks, I was way off. That has to be Claro.
It has no smell to speak of, when fine sanded it does appear to be a bit oily

I don't think of claro walnut as oily. How heavy is it?

Very similar to some wood I'm working with at the moment, this is Walnut, but English Walnut.

One I made from a sister set some years ago.

How about figured Ovangkol (Shedua, Benge)?

...it looks a little bit like Queensland Walnut too....although that is not a true walnut ie. Juglans spp. it was obviously named because it looked like true walnut...

...my 2 cents

I've got a set I bought a few years ago that looks the same. It was listed as figured African Mahogany, but I don't know the exact kind

I was thinking maybe Myrtle. But what do I know.

Just to bring things full circle, I'd say black acacia or koa.

I'm going with Claro Walnut.

Colin, that's a beautiful guitar. Nice to see your work surface again!
I've got a set of English walnut just like you pictured, courtesy of Russell Rose.
Perhaps he got his set from you?

Steve, thanks, that one came from the very early days of the OLF, I think we were among about 100 members then! Yes the set you have from Russell will be from the same billet as my sets, I think I sent him a couple of sets one of which I belive he sent to you. This one was my personal DADGad guitar. The player I'm making the new one for tried out some of my guitars including this one and fell in love with it, so I'm making his from it's sister set and the sister Italian spruce top set.
