I was bending the second ovangkol side for an om I'm making and it split on the waist. First time this has ever happened to me, was it just my fault or was the ovangkol partially to blame? |

I have no first-hand experience with it, but I've heard that Ovangkol can be a real pain to bend, so it probably isn't just you. |

Frequently - balky bending in a species that would otherwise be mild mannered can be traced back to runout in the wood.... This was the case with my Sapele that would not bend at normal thicknesses.... The first thing to try is to go thinner... A side that will not bend without breaking at 0.090" may bend just find at 0.080 or 0.070".... I ended up taking that sapele down to 0.065" to bend.... It still fought me every inch of the way - but it did finally take the shape... There are some other tools and tricks out there... Many people use the veneer softener "Super Soft II" to loosen up balky sides.... The other thing is to try alternately bending more dry vs bending a little more wet... That sapele wanted to be a little more wet - as it just wouldn't go dry... but other woods like Quilted maple do seem to do better dry.... Thanks |
