| Post subject: | Cutting fan fret headstock angle |
How do you guys exactly cut headstock angle for a fan fret. I found this method and I'm looking for better, more precise and faster ways to do it. How would one make a volute headstock for a fan fret? |

I dont .... I use a neck blank thats about an inch thick, and as such, you can cut the scarf square (90 degrees), and glue on the scarfed paddle. Then once your fingerboard is ready, use it to mark the angle required at the nut. add on some wings if required (I do). Then plane the angle into the headstock. I have done this about a dozen times, never failed yet. As long as the headstock paddle piece is thick enough, about an inch, you will have plenty of wood to get the angle planed in correctly, and have a paddle about 1/2 inch or so thick - add your front and rear plates and veneers as requried, good to go. |

Well... to find what the angle is on the end of the fingerboard, you draw or mark (or use fretfind and print it, thats what I use) out the required scales. The angle of the paddle is then whatever your headstock angle is, I use 13 degrees, square off the end of the fingerboard angle. The angle of your paddle doesnt change - just where it references square to the end of the fingerboard, as that angle changes from being normally square. You still have an intersection of two flat planes, they just dont meet square to the centre of the neck. |

Use a zero fret and leave the nut square. |
