33 years ago I made a plastic hammer using a birch handle finished with tung oil. The finish is still there.I called dicks and ace hardware neither has tru-oil,My question for all you OLF ers out there , have any of you used tung oil to finish an acoustic gtr neck.? Have used tung oil in cabinetmaking, but never for gtr construction. I realize that the tru-oil is a type of vy thin oil based varnish, wheras the tung oil comes from a tree. Your thoughts please ?? |

I asked the same questions a few weeks ago. I can't remember the thread name, but several OLFers said they used tung oil on necks but not bodies as they thought it would be impractical with the lengthy cure time and amount of surface area. Hope that helps. I'll try and dig up the thread if I can find it. |

This is what I use on my paddles, and I've made many hundreds of them. 1 sealer coat of varnish. I use Epiphanes thinned 50%. Dry one day, sand with 220 paper, apply 1 coat of tung oil with 0000 steel wool. Buff with clean cloth. Next day, apply 1 coat of tung oil with 0000 steel wool. Buff with clean cloth. Done. Oh, and most of those paddle shafts and grips are Cherry. |

Hi doug have you used this method varnish/tungoil on gtr necks?/have some behlens rock hard that can be thinned? My canoe paddles were carved from doug fir. |

I'm betting that Bob's Gun Rack in Lees Summit stocks it, it is found in nearly every gun store. |
