I posted this repair back in the summer, it had a seriously twisted neck. http://luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=33411 Well, I put things on the back burner for awhile but am now back on it. Thanks to all who gave advice there. I ended up heating the neck with an iron, clamping to get most of the warp out, then sanding flat. So today's inquiry; I think that the fingerboard is mahogany, looks like it, or maybe its a type of rosewood that looks a bit like mahogany, anything come to mind? The question is, if you agree that this is mahogany what to do with it? should I apply a finish to it like one would a maple fingerboard? Or leave it alone? If I were to finish what would you recommend? I took photos but they won't upload, Will try to add them a bit later Any advice much appreciated with this one. |

Mahogany is too soft for a fingerboard. If the wood is too pale in color, I would dye it with aniline. |

Sure it's not something like mahogany? |

There are hundreds of tropical woods that look like mahogany. IMHO, if mahogany actually was used, it was a big mistake. |

That is not mahogany. Likely it's some generic hardwood that was dyed/stained. It looks like it is cupped and when someone went to sand it the edges were sanded through to reveal it's true color. |

Thanks for your replies, I'm inclined to agree, it can't be mahogany but is rather some other, similarly pale hardwood. I'll take the dying it black so that the accumulated finger filth doesn't show up. |
