Hi folks, I have a customer who wants a replacement neck for his guitar. The body is highly flamed Oregon Myrtle, and I would love to build the neck out of matching wood. I laminate my necks--usually--so the need is not great (at least in size). 1" thick, 3 1/2" wide, by about 44-48" long. I can get two lams out of that, and then put a contrasting piece down the center. Best case scenario is perfectly slab sawn, so that when stood upright the neck will be quartersawn. I'll include a pic of this guitar to show the Myrtle, and how I plan to construct the new neck. Attachment: general_dsc08665_text.jpg Thanks for any help you might offer, Steve |

Steve, You might give a call to Pacific Coast Woods who is a sponser. Guess what kind of wood they specialize in? I have not purchased from them but have heard good only good things about them. Last year I communicated with them and they were very receptive. My goal was to stop by their shop in Oregon while on vacation. My plans changed due to illness and I never made it. Best of luck, Philip Perdue |

Give Gilmer woods a shout. Otherwise I can check with some of our locals here in Portland. -C |

Check with Oregon Wild Woods, Steve. I know they've got sets of figured myrtle, so they might have some dimensional stuff, too. www.oregonwildwood.com |

There's a guy who sells tonewood on eBay who occasionally has myrtle neck blanks up for auction. I've bought a couple from him. I've also bought enough other stuff from him to know he's honest and typically has a good inventory of maple, walnut, myrtle and other stuff on hand. I don't recall his name but his eBay ID is fiddlebckwoodshack. Might be worth tracking him down and giving him a call. |

Many thanks guys, all good tips. I did ask Oregon Wild Woods, and they're still looking. Didn't think about Pacific Coast Woods, but I'm going there now. Thanks again.... What a place! Steve |

I bought some wonderful figured myrtlewood from both Vince @ http://www.pacificcoastwoods.net/ and Stan @ http://www.stansellguitars.com/ Some of the stuff I got from Stan was remarkable. He just e-mailed me with pics of a recently acquired slab of very nice curly myrtle....so I know he's looking for customers. ![]() |

Thanks Lars and Zlurgh! Vince is setting aside a piece for me now, and Les said he'll keep his eyes open. Turns out this isn't quite like buying Oak lumber... Makes you think this stuff doesn't grow on trees ya know. Steve |
