Does anyone out there have a wiring diagram to explain wiring a conventional dimmer switch to a omega small heating blanket.thanks |

Typical home depot dimmers only have two wires ... an in and an out .... they should be labeled line and load - line is the in from the wall plug, load is the connection to the blanket. You connect the black from your cord with the plug on it (well, you should be running this thru a timer first, then a dimmer) to the line side of the dimmer. The white from the cord gets connected directly to one of the blanket wires. Then connect the other wire from the blanket to the load side of the dimmer .. fire it up. |

A "normal" dimmer switch just breaks one leg of the circuit, same as the switch you flip to turn a light on or off with. I suppose you could wire a box into a cord. You said "small" heating blanket, but it may still carry too much current for a normal dimmer switch. If you need to turn it down I'd recommend a router speed control. Most dimmer switches are good for 300 watts. The inexpensive router speed control I have linked is good for 4 times that much. http://www.harborfreight.com/router-speed-control-43060.html Another option is to unplug it and plug it back in to control temp. |

Go with the router control. It's rated for the wattage and no wiring to do. BTW, the one that I have has an internal screw adjustment in case the upper setting is too cool or the lower setting is too hot. Just remove the cover and turn the screw. |

thanks my router speed control is rated 20 amps made in taiwan.Forgot where I bought it, good idea.Saves me a trip to homeless depot. Plugged in the speed control works!! |

Standard 600W household dimmer is usually fine if you have one of the 2.5 W/sq in. blankets (36"x6"), the 5 W/sq in would require a router control or something else rated for that much power. |
