For the 3 rd time my gear motor has quit working which turns the conveyor belt.. Having a difficult time locating the problem .It has a speed control. an reversing switch, Several times i manually turned the conveyor belt and had it running then it stopped again.I had redone the wiring connections 2 weeks ago from the reversing switch to the gear motor. Finally the conveyor belt would not fire up after turning it manually. I tried to hook up the speed control directly to the gear motor, nothng,so the problem is either in the speed control or the gear motor .The machine is 2.5 yrs old. lightly usedThe reversing switch was working when I got the machine running by turning the conveyor belt manually. My electrician friend says its either a defective speed control or a capacitor in the gear motor gone bad?suggestions?

Isn't it a DC motor? They don't have capacitors.
I would check the output voltage of the speed control. If it is a DC motor (which is most common on these devices), you should have DC voltage, no AC. I suspect that the rectifier has gone bad.

John your right, abt the capacitor I tried hooking up a 12 v dc battery charger last night directly to the gear motor , and nothing happened. There are 2 leads coming out of the speed controller wired into the reversing switch. Does that mean that the speed control converts the ac voltage to 12 volts DC?? If so , would that be 12 volts converted by the rectifier into the reversing switch. ??Thanks ernie

After spending quite a bit of time trying to fix my sander, I called woodmaster this morning, even though my sander is out of warranty, they gave me a speed controller to test my gear motor, which was intermittent, I called back, and returned with a new gear motor.I am very appreciative, of their kindness

I am glad you found the problem. The voltage output of the speed controller is DC, but it is variable.
