I have been using the Beta version of Audacity 2 and the full version is now released downloading. This is supposed to be quite a bit better than the old version 1 and its upgrade releases.

i have only ever used it because it came bundled as a software package for a USB turntable i got 5 years ago...i rather like it. gotta love the free/unlimited MP3 converter function too. other home recording software restricts this....
