This seems like it has potential to be a real mess, and create problems down the line. Some of my concerns are not getting enough epoxy into the channel, if I apply to the CF, then when I push it in it rubs off and is a mess on the area where I want to later glue the FB. If I wipe it down with acetone, it will get into the neck a bit and perhaps make an issue when gluing the FB. I am planning on gluing the FB with epoxy as well. I cut the channel on the table saw and got a wobble in a couple of spots, so it needs a bit of extra epoxy to fill. My thinking is to tape off the area, thin the epoxy a bit with acetone, apply to the cf, install, work with a putty knife to get it in the channels and gaps, scrape clean with the putty knife, wipe down with acetone, remove tape. If there are any visible gaps go back with some thinned epoxy and fill. Suggestions? Thanks, Rob |

It's a bit messy but no big deal. After "icing" the CF & pushing it home, wipe with paper towels (no acetone). I then use spring clamps with a finishing nail underneath (ie pressing on the CF) to really seat it (which becomes obvious after epoxying half a dozen clamps to the neck). When dry use a cabinet scraper to clean up the surface. (It's occured to me more than once to get organized enough to epoxy the rods in and the fingerboard on in one go. Not done it yet.) |

After I fit the CF rods I put masking tape on either side of the channel to keep the epoxy off of the rest of the neck. Once the rods are set I can clean off the excess epoxy with a piece of flat scrap. I pull the tape after it starts to set up so it doesn't run. Edit: here's a photo. This is a 12-string neck so I used two 1/8" x 3\8' bars. I also ran them out under the headplate. Attachment: DSCF0663.JPG

I do it pretty much the same way Dave does. I've always used toothpicks instead of finish nails, but the finish nails are a better idea.... I don't know that I'll ever try to do it along with the fingerboard. I run my CF through the peghead and like to put the peghead overlay on before gluing on the fingerboard. Dave |

I glue it in using a small strip of wood and let everything set up , I do this btw when the neck is still in the 3"x 4" block stage before ever cutting the shape . I inset the cf slightly , approx .060 and after its all set and dryed I run it through the planer and just barely rake the surface , it cleans it and levels . Then I redraw any necess lines and cut out my neck blanks . |
